GENERAL DENTISTRY

*COMPOSITE FILLINGS *DENTURES *NIGHT GUARDS

GENERAL DENTISTRY

Thanks to improved awareness of proper home care, water fluoridation, and effective preventative treatments, tooth decay and other dental problems are less prevalent than ever before. However, dental problems can still occur from time to time. Thankfully, technologies and methods are constantly improving, offering more effective and less invasive methods to keep your smile healthy. The most painless way to maintain good dental health is with regular check-ups. We value each and every one of our patients so we promise to provide you with the most comfortable and convenient dental service.

COMPOSITE FILLINGS

  • Cavities are the resulting space of rotted enamel. Left untreated, the decay will eventually cause extensive damage to the tooth, potentially infecting it. Fortunately, if a cavity is identified early, it can be treated with a simple filling typically done in one appointment. First, a local anesthetic, or freeze, will be applied. After removal of the decay, the cavity will be filled to prevent further decay and protect the sensitive inner layers of the tooth from cold, heat, and pressure. The filling is applied in layers and hardened with a special light. Finally, the layers are shaped and polished to restore the tooth’s appearance and functions. We use composite (plastic resin) in most cases as it is superior to the silver amalgam fillings commonly used in the past. Unlike silver amalgam fillings, composite fillings have no mercury content. Composite fillings are also less sensitive to heat or coldness, so they won’t expand or contract as much as silver amalgam. And since the composite material is the same colour as the tooth, they are virtually invisible, so nobody will even notice!

DENTURES

  • Dentures are artificial replacements that take the place of missing teeth and gum. It allows a patient with the loss of any teeth to chew, speak, and smile normally again. Dentures are important because a lack of dentures when required can result in sunken lower facial features. Complete dentures replace all of the teeth in an arch – the upper arch or the lower arch – and partial dentures replace just some teeth. Creating a personalized perfect set of dentures involves several appointments over a period of several weeks. Precise molds and careful measurements will be taken before they are fabricated. Then additional fittings and adjustments will be needed to ensure proper fit, function and appearance. Your dentist will also provide guidance for optimal care and cleaning.

Night Guards

  • Adults and children who grind their teeth at night should have night guards to prevent tooth damage. Night guards are preventative appliances that can eliminate the heavy unconscious tooth-on-tooth forces experienced during the night. In general, night guards cover your upper teeth only. In some instances, however, such as when you wear braces or another fixed dental appliance on your lower jaw, your dentist will make night guards available for lower teeth as well. In some cases, even if you are unaware of signs or symptoms of progressive wear, your dentist will be able to diagnose those signs and suggest a night guard prevent the development of additional symptoms such as jaw soreness or headaches. Effective night guards should be comfortable, wear-resistant, easy to clean, and should not restrict your breathing or speech.
